Playing Golf is Like Losing Weight

As I was watching some of the Masters this year, it dawned on me how similar playing golf feels to striving toward weight loss goals – particularly how challenging shooting an eagle is and how easy it is to follow that up with a bogey (or double bogey!).

Golf is often described as a game of patience, precision, and persistence. These same qualities are essential for anyone embarking on a journey to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. If you’ve ever spent a day on the course, you already know that golf is about more than just hitting a ball—it’s a test of focus, strategy, and long-term commitment. In many ways, the path to lasting weight loss mirrors the experience of playing a round of golf.

Patience and Progress

In golf, every hole presents a new challenge. Some days, you’ll find yourself in the rough, struggling to get back on track. The same is true for weight loss. Progress is rarely linear—there will be days when the scale doesn’t budge, or when old habits resurface. Just as a golfer must maintain composure after a bad shot, you must be patient with yourself and recognize that setbacks are part of the journey. What matters is your ability to keep going, learn from mistakes, and focus on the next step—whether it’s the next swing or the next healthy meal.

Precision and Planning

Golfers know that each swing requires careful planning: selecting the right club, gauging the wind, and visualizing the shot. Similarly, successful weight loss depends on making thoughtful choices. Planning meals, monitoring portion sizes, and tracking your progress are all vital. Just as you wouldn’t approach a difficult shot without considering your options, you shouldn’t embark on a weight loss plan without a strategy. Preparation makes it easier to stay on course, even when temptations arise.

Persistence and Consistency

A full round of golf requires stamina and consistent effort. One good hole doesn’t guarantee a low score—success comes from stringing together small wins over 18 holes. Losing weight is much the same. Crash diets or extreme workouts might yield quick results, but lasting change comes from building healthy habits and sticking with them over time. Celebrate small victories—a nutritious breakfast, a walk after dinner, or skipping dessert—and trust that these add up, just like pars and birdies on a scorecard.

Tips for Getting and Staying Healthy

  1. Set Realistic Goals: Just as golfers set targets for each hole, set achievable health goals. Start with small changes, like drinking more water or adding a serving of vegetables to your meals.
  2. Move Your Body: Walking the golf course is great exercise! Incorporate regular physical activity into your routine—whether it’s walking, biking, swimming, or even taking the stairs. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week.
  3. Eat Mindfully: Pay attention to what and how much you eat. Enjoy meals slowly, savoring each bite, and avoid distractions like TV or smartphones during meals.
  4. Track Your Progress: Keep a journal or use a mobile app to log your food, exercise, and weight changes. Tracking helps you stay accountable and see your improvements over time.
  5. Stay Positive and Patient: Remember, every golfer has a bad hole—and every weight loss journey has ups and downs. Focus on the long game, celebrate your progress, and don’t let setbacks derail your efforts.

Embrace the Process

In both golf and weight loss, the journey is as important as the destination. Embrace the process, stay consistent, and enjoy the small victories along the way. You’ll find that with patience, planning, and persistence, you can achieve your healthiest self—one step (or one swing) at a time.
